Orientation Course - Who, Why, What.

Hello Reader!

Finally, having decided on the design of my blog, the platform I will use for my course and decided on the task to do, I can start my justification for the Orientation course. I will try to give my justifications and show my preliminary plan for the course. Once the plan is complete, I will get back to you about what I have achieved, what worked and what did not work.

However, for the plan as of right now, I knew there are a few things that I definitely wanted to include. I wanted to make sure that I have elements of connectivism in my course. This was something me and partner discussed extensively.

We began our discussion about behaviorism, the fundamental concept behind most of teaching and learning. Since behaviorism focuses on defining behavior that is desired, it is important to understand the underlying theory behind this practice (Moore, 2011). We had read an interesting article regarding behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism, which was peculiar to me, since I was always drawn towards these concepts.

I am personally attracted towards these concepts, sine they are fundamentals, but my interest has piqued even further, when I started to analyze what is happening in the educational sphere around me. I realize that these fundamental concepts, that were established at the end of the 20th century, are still not being practiced in academia to its full extent. We went from going to the moon with the first computer that fit in a space craft, to having devices that are x10 stronger than this space craft - in our pockets. Yet teaching theories have been established before the space craft, yet the development has stagnated.

Considering these developments, or lack there of, I wanted to focus on another aspect that was born out of these three (behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism), which is constructivism. This development, focuses on the teaching and learning occurring amongst students, as communities, through the medium of the internet and other contemporary means (ibid.).

I want to allow students to use the internet, firstly through Edmodo and its availability of communication through comments and direct messages, to learn and encourage students to use the internet as part of their learning.

Now that this is established, let me focus on WHO this orientation course is targeted towards. WIUT has over a 1000 students enter the foundation course each year. Our job, as university representatives, is to introduce the students to the university and all of its aspects. In order to make our job more efficient, an online orientation was considered and developed.

Since we have the materials already developed for last year's students, we were discussing and thinking about how to change our approach and make it more in line with connectivism and new theories that we have learnt.

The content of the orientation course is simple - introduce the main regulations and procedure as well as the important services students can access. Since we already have the videos, we will be working around what we want to do with the activities and how to incorporate my favorite part - connectivism.

Choosing appropriate Platform for the Course

We have discussed a variety of tools that can be used to create an online teaching course. Some of the tools we discussed are: Google Classroom, Moodle, Black Board and Edmodo.  Personally, I did not find Google Classroom as effective as the tool that I comfortable with, which is the Black Board. Since I am teaching a module using the Black Board, it is most closest to me. However, having this understanding of the Black Board, does not mean that I will stick to what I am most comfortable with.  The next tool we covered, was Moodle. This was significantly more alien to me as a platform, since the user-interface was not as friendly as I am used to. Moodle is quite a powerful tool, considering the variety of options it offers for the users, but this lack of user-friendliness for the teacher, and subsequently the students, was outputting to me personally.  I decided on a tool that I had researched together with my partner: Edmodo. This platform is overall quite user friendly,...

Reflection on the Module

I would like to make my final official post, about my reflection on the module of Innovative Learning and Teaching.  I came into the module expecting to learn new methods of teaching in traditional classroom, but I left the module learning much more - a whole new world of how teaching and learning can occur, with a concept that I quote to this day (the concept that stood out to me the most): connectivism.  When we started the module with theories, I really enjoyed the theories that built upon what we had previously covered in other modules. We discussed programmed instruction, which was an interesting backstory behind teaching and learning. I was shocked and inspired that theories from several decades ago are still something that we have to consider and develop today.  However, the most interesting and colorful discussion, was about connectivism. For me, it is more than just focusing on online tools being an integral part of learning, but also a whole new approach to teac...

Introducing Myself

My name is Shahzaib Ahmed Khan, I am currently a student of Masters in Learning and Teaching. I work as an Academic English and Transferable Skills (AETS) Officer at Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT), as well as a Module Leader of I, Citizen.  I have picked this course for professional and personal development, in order to further myself as not only a teacher/lecturer/facilitator/knowledgeable other, but also to develop my overall skills of teaching and learning. Since I am the eldest son in my family, it is also important that I understand the diversity in my family, namely my three brothers and sister.  Furthermore, I would like to elaborate on my professional background. Working as the AETS officer at WIUT, I have to be able to address student inquiries coming from various different backgrounds. I also conduct workshops throughout the academic year, where I have to practice with students certain skills.  As for Module Leading, it working with stud...
